Large Familia – The SFSU Familia was founded in 2010 and started off with about 6 members. After about two years, they have seen a dramatic increase in the number of registered Hermanos. Last year it went to 30 active members but compared to this year they have about 60+ members that are willing to live by HU’s three pillars: Academics, Community, and Social Interaction. They are looking forward to seeing the final results of which Hermano ends up in which committee that we have have to offer, which are: 1.Academics 2.Publicity 3.Fundraising/Management 4.History 5.Inner Social 6.Community Service. They expect to use these committees as a means for the Hermanos to find a space where they feel comfortable doing work.
Community Service – Right off the bat before the Fall 2012 semester started, SFSU got engaged on community service. The first event on August 18th, 2012, was The Great Urban Race. This event was a very well spent one because they had about 18 Hermanos split up through out the city and each held down a check point for the race participants. Then on September 15th, 2012 they did a 4 way joint community service with HU & HAU from SFSU and Berkeley.
Another great event was on the 29th of September, 2012: where 20 Hermanos went to to the YMCA located in a Latino community, Mission District. The SFSU Familia went out there and helped build a play ground from scratch so that children may have a safe play place to enjoy. Now in October they are looking forward to supporting the Annual Breast Cancer Walk here in San Francisco on the 20th. They are expecting to see about 30 Hermanos from SFSU walk this event as a means to send out the message that HU wears pink to support the Breast Cancer Walk.
Hermanos Unidos de SFSU has been working with a Personal Catering Business. This business is ran by Marco Ballesteros and his Mother Carmelina Ballesteros which own two restaurants on the SFSU campus and a few more throughout the city. SFSU first met Marco and his mother through business however as time progressed they eventually built a friendship together leading to a great opportunity service to help the local San Francisco communities. As a collaboration they are planning to feed people in need in unrepresented communities with a goal being 1,000 satisfied people. This event will take place next semester as they wait for the city to approve permits needed to have a safe outcome. They have reached out to Latinas Unidas from USF to help them to do such an important event that will serve the local shared communities.
